Company History
Brantly was founded in 1975 by principals John F. Liparini and Hugh F. Cole Jr. with the purpose of building single family homes to be built and sold on land developed by the company. The first project in western Howard County consisted of 32 one-acre lots and homes developed and built over a two-year period. A second project acquired in the engineering phase was located in the Laurel area of Prince George's County and consisted of 60 units to be developed with homes.
Early in the process of researching the market, Brantly was introduced to key players at Ryan Homes (now NVR), who were interested in buying all of Brantly's lots on a developed basis. As profit objectives could be achieved without the risk of homebuilding, Ryan/NVR became the first builder customer and the business relationship has benefited both companies for more than 30 years. Brantly has developed projects as small as five parcels and as large as 400 lots in partnership with NVR.
An early objective in land development was to combine Brantly's Howard County experience with The Rouse Company to find infill parcels in and around Columbia. In this way Brantly was able to capitalize on existing infrastructure and a growing market for builders who were not invited to build in Columbia. NVR was the largest. While slow growth policies and more limited land supply have reduced the number of opportunities in Howard County, Brantly's local experience allows them to continue to find outstanding opportunities that with careful planning will yield excellent results.
Over the years Brantly has rezoned, developed and sold several major commercial projects in the county including the Clarksville Auto Park and Montpelier Research Park. Additional small retail parcels continue to be acquired and prepared for development.
